En effet, la 101ième airborne de l'armée américaine fût encerclée. L'armée allemande qui était de beaucoup supérieure en nombre, ne fit pas peur au général McAuliffe. Sachant que la ville de Bastogne ne devait jamais tomber aux mains de l'ennemi, il ne s'est pas découragé face à la gravité de la situation. Les allemands ont proposé une reddition "honorable "aux américains le 22 décembre 1944 . Le général McAuliffe, en charge de la 101ième aéroportée, dit le fameux «Nut's !» à cet endroit.
